Buying a new vacuum cleaner can be a confusing proposition. There are many types, brands and models to choose from. They all claim to be the best for cleaning up pet hair, and to keep the family tidy. They come in a range of prices, from $100 to nearly $1,000. Choosing the best vacuum cleaner for you and your home involves thinking more than how simple it is to maneuver and what equipment are included and the amount of suction it can provide. Think about the surfaces you’ll be cleaning, how your home is laid out and what you’d like to see in a model that is bagged or not and corded or not.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab will be able to help. We’re particularly interested in vacuum cleaners as a category. We’re constantly getting new samples to test, and as a member of ASTM International’s F11 Vacuum Cleaner Committee, we meet and interact twice yearly with technical and engineering representatives from all brands to help create and define the test standards for vacuum cleaners we all use to assess efficiency, user-friendliness and durability, among other things.
